Hidden files preventing re-installation?

What version are you trying to remove/reinstall?  Version 9 that should be installed when running Mac OS X 10.9, and version 9 doesn't have a DMG so I think you're trying to install version 8 on to Mavericks and that isn't supported.

Have you tried removing SAV via the supported methods posted here (either version 8 or 9)...

And you may want to get a free copy of version 9 for any reinstall (get rid of any DMGs you my have) on Mavericks.

Version 9 comes in a zip and extracts to an application for installation.

Sorry, I misspoke. I am removing version 9 and trying to replace with version 9. You're right it's not a DMG file -- it's the application that unzips.

Yes, I used the uninstall application as well.

Version 9 does have a script.  Maybe running that and reinstalling will help?  Post below mentions it.

I tried this as mentioned, but no luck. Error message: "No such file or directory"

cd /Library/Sophos\ Anti-Virus/
sudo ./remove_v9.sh

I'm getting the response that my user name "is not in the sudoers file." Do I need to save the file to the desktop of my admin account rather than a regular user account?

I moved the script file to the root, logged in to terminal as admin, and this finally worked! If I use "locate sophos" there are still hundreds of hidden files--will they cause a problem?

cd /

chmod +x remove_v9.sh

sudo ./remove_v9.sh

         it should NOT be used on a version 8 installation

They shouldn't.  Sophos might be mentioned in a lot of different files.  Have you got some examples of what's left over?

Most of them are cache files, like this:

/Library/Caches/com.sophos.sau/warehouse/fadbb2402fc0ba88ede9216aafc5cea7x000.dat

But I've successfully installed now, so should be good to go.
