SAV Dreadfully Slow, Mac Freezing On Shutdown.

Hi,

I installed SAV a few months ago, and ever since it has slowed down not only my Firefox browsing, but absolutely everything on my Mac.  Even for something as simple as switching to a different program, there is a painfully long drag (the dreaded spinning orb).  I'm OK with some degree of drag, as I thought scanning for viruses etc. on the fly would be resource intensive, but this really is too much.  More recently, I've started noticing my Mac sometimes freezes On shutting down.  And while I can't be sure SAV is the culprit,  this is my strong suspicion.  This happens now maybe once every other day.  Also, I've added no new software since adding SAV, except trying to install/un-install some standard Adobe PDF Plug-ins, and maybe(?) Firefox updates.  At this point, I'm writing on this board in case there's something obvious I've missed that could alleviate the problems I'm experiencing.  Setting the issue of freezing on shutdown for a moment, Is there something I can do to greatly reduce the performance drag I'm experiencing?

Thanks, Tongzhi

  • Best test, whizz it off quickly...

...then try using your Mac for a couple of days (careful what you click on, etc.) and then reinstall and compare.

    Other suggestions:

Maybe open Disk Utility and run a repair on the drive to be sure that's OK.

Make sure your OS and third-party app are all up-to-date and then reinstall SAV with a fresh download...

...then force an update from the shield.  Reboot (always worth it to be sure everything is OK) and test again.  Compare the computer now to before.

SAV may cause a slight delay in opening files etc. but beach balling on small files are programs isn't generally expected.  Consider what the on-access scanner may be doing in the background:  Is there a large file on the Desktop (guessing) or an external drive attached that is being read from/written to a lot?  Check Activity Monitor for processes.

You could also close applications that you aren't working with to limit what may be causing the problem.

  • Hi ruckus,

Sorry my response is so late.  I marked this as solved.  I followed up on most of your suggestions, and in so doing I cleaned up a very messy desktop.  That seems to have helped.  Still sluggish, but probably(?) in the zone of tolerability.  I'm going to give it a few days and report back.  Thanks for your help.

  • Hi ruckus,

Just a follow-up on my earlier post...after doing a (still) more thorough clean-up of my desktop, speed has indeed improved in a noticeable way.

    Thanks for your help.
