Disabling Sophos from start up

How do I disable Sophos AV from starting up everytime I log in my mac? I only wish to use it when I want to scan so that it won't take up additional resources. I have disabled the On-Access scanning, but I'm sure it's still taking up some memory resource. And I don't wish to only "Hide Status in Menu Bar"

Is it even possible?

Edit: This link would be useful for people that's in my situation. Explains stuff related to memory

But I just wanna make sure, after disabling the On-Access, is it using any resources? Idle and also when files are changed.

You can hold the shift key, whilst logging in, to suppress login items in general (not Sophos alone).

Don't expect a way to permanently disable the software. Sooner or later, it will probably heal itself.

  • Hello Codomo_Soap,

I'm surprised that you seemingly don't know about Login Items when you are that worried about additional resources used. I wonder who or what made you think that disabling On-Access and not starting the UI is needed in your situation? Do you have any particular issues? Just asking because if you really have to worry you should be able to answer after disabling the On-Access, is it using any resources? yourself.

    when I want to scan

When is this? Are you sure that you always want when you should? A long time ago, when most computers "communicated" by diskette it was simple to know when and what to scan (but of course it didn't help if your scanner's signatures were not up to date). [fast forward] On-Access scan (together with frequent automated updates) is a very good idea. Yes, you did scan this stuff you got from a "trusted" source - unfortunately you didn't remember to update your signatures in the last month. Yes, you did update your signatures - this nifty self-extracting archive looked like any other program to your scanner so it didn't detect the rascal inside which launched after extraction. And of course password protected archives are no-go.

Something different but with a similar setting - backup. Once cumbersome and easily skipped nowadays is running in the background. Of course something like Time Machine takes up additional resources and of course you just could do a backup when you want (say, because you know you'll inadvertently move an important file to Trash tomorrow and notice only after you've clicked Empty Trash).

As malware for Macs is still rare dedicating resources to its detection might seem unnecessary and is - as some think - only for the benefit of negligent Windows users. This might change and not a few say it will.

Sophos Mac HE wasn't built to be used for on-demand scans only - it will use more resources than necessary for just this task because the other components are there. AutoUpdate will still do it's job (but the impact is likely insignificant), and the on-access component will sit there waiting to be called to action, it will use memory. You might not be aware - the UI and (custom) scans are only a part. Most components start with the OS and not when a user  logs in.
