My Yahoo email and IM has been hacked

My yahoo account has been penetrated on my Mac computer. A virus is going through all of my contacts and randomly selects 3 contacts and emails them from what appears to be my account. My free Sophos trial version was able to locate some files, which I deleted. However, it hasn't helped to stop more damage. Currently someone is going online in my Yahoo Messenger, is using my photo and is posing as me, trying to get my contacts to take an IQ test. This happened when I was asleep and my computer was off! Although Sophos found some contaminated files and I manually removed them...this new IM hacker is occurring.  I have a MAC single processor with OSX 10.4.4. Sophos is not picking up anymore files or is able to prevent someone from hacking my email account.  What can i do to permanently eliminate this hacker from my computer? Thanks!

  • Hello Debbie,

your account is not on your Mac but at Yahoo. The items found by Sophos (BTW: it's not a trial but a full free version) on your Mac might or might not be related. If someone has managed to get hold of your account details he can use them from wherever he wants. I suggest you go this this Yahoo page for recommended actions.

  • Will be redirected to babylon site upon opening the browser. Is this a kind of virus? I have done editing the options and change the homepage but still the problem persists.

  • Very strange! Did you get this sorted?  My friend had this issue as well.

  • Got the same problem myself.

For the past 2 weeks I'm receiving messages from friends asking me why I sent them emails with nothing on it  (even the subject box was empty), except a url.  Even my wife received 3 such emails under my yahoo account.  What's strange about it was that I never sent them anything.  Does this mean my yahoo account was also hacked?  What do I have to do to stop this?

  • It has happened to me before. it turned out that nothing happened from the yahoo site... Email addresses are fished from the web and people can send emails putting those email address in the reply to field of any message...  so it can look like if it was sent by you...

    best regards

Sounds like you picked up an AdWare Trojan somewhere.

  • When you receive an email, you receive more than just the message. The email comes with headers that carry important information that can tell where the email was sent from and possibly who sent it. For that, you would need to find the IP address of the sender . Maybe .... the hacker could be someone you already know (It happened to my bestfriend)

  • This happened to me, too, on my yahoo account. And also a friend of mine. It's not on your mac, I have a mac, too. It was on the yahoo account. Someone gained access to my yahoo account, and somehow got my whole address book. I went in, changed my password to something much more complicated and unrelated to me, and it hasn't happened since then. But it certainly was annoying. Everything seems to be OK now.

  • I and 2 of my other friends experienced the same thing though not at the same time. I think our yahoo accounts have been hacked. It came to a point where I couldn't log in and when I typed the password that I have been using for years, it says It's incorrect. And I tried recovering my password but I could not retrieve it anymore.
