Sophos AV blocking Internet Access

Last week whilst travelling I had a low battery power down on my MBP running Marvericks. When I came back up everything seamed normal except my browser access. I could browse to a page and the URL would show it loaded, but the window would be blank, just a white window. Eventually I went into Sophos preferences, and set both Block Access and Block Downloads to off and my internet started working. I thougth that maybe my version of Sophos was corrupt so I removed the original and re-installed a new version.

This my internet stopped again, turing off the Web Protection solved the problem and internet is working.

I am browsing to the sites I normally go and an they are very trustworthy sites. Any idea why this is happening?

For some months I have noticed I get a 'server not found message' very frequently. I am unsure whether this may have been a symptom of the current problem. This behaviour has also gone since turning off Web Protection.

Anybody had a similar problem?

  • I had the same problem - I spent 2 hours with Apple and 2 escalations trying to slove this problem of blocked sites thinking it was related to a recent OSX 10.9.3 upgrade.

Don't hold your breathe waiting on Sophos for a response - I called them they don't support free products. A bit disingenuous - we are good guys protecting the free world , we'll get to your level of risk when we fee like it.

Otherwise buy our full product or pound salt. So having their security product free or otherwise is like having no security at all.
