Slow browsing after upgrade to Mavericks and SAV for Mac version 9

I have a problem. I have SAV 8.0.3c installed on an iMac running OSX 10.7.5, on access protection is enabled and web pages load virtually instantly. I have SAV 9.0.8 installed on an iMac running 10.9.2 and web pages are significantly slowed with on acess enabled. They are slowed to the point I thought something was wrong with my ISP. I still had 8.0.3c installed when I upgraded to Mavericks and eventually updated SAV to 9.0.8. Could there be some residual file left over from 8.0.3c that is slowing things down or is 9.0.8 just slow on Mavericks? I've tried with three different browsers.

TIA

Louis

  • Do you have some examples of URLs that are slow to load?  How slow is slow, what's the difference?

Have a read of this thread for what may be causing it...

...and as mentioned on this thread...

...test disabling the Web Protection options one at a time and post back which speeds browsing up and which don't (pls try them all if you can to help narrow it down).

  • I'm having a similar problem -- but with a bit of a twist. After experiencing the slow browsing in Mavericks, I tried to remove my current copy of Sophos and reinstall -- just to do a clean install, and because the application in the Library folder was grayed-out and had the circle with the slash through it -- and I'm unable to get the Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg to run. Manually moving the .app files to the Trash and emptying hasn't helped. Running the fresh download of v9 fails, with this message: "An incompatible product is installed. This software cannot be installed over the existing installation. No changes were made to the existing installation."

Sorry to be clueless; I've just never encountered this glitch before.

    Thanks --

    Susan

Version 9 doesn't have .pkg files, only .app files so it sounds like you have version 8.  And as you mention the /Library/ folder I think it's not the Home Edition as the Home Edition has the uninstaller in the Applications folder.  Where did you get the install from?  Perhaps a company or college, but not Sophos.com?

If you do have version 8 installed you shouldn't be experiencing slow browsing due to Web Protection because only version 9 has Web Protection.

For that error see the thread below and pick the post that applies.  Read both the first and second posts as you may not have the Home Edition.  Making an assumption that you have the home edition and have version 8 you could have only moved the 'Sophos Remove' app to the Trash and should follow the first post on the thread to replace the uninstaller and upgrade to version 9.  If you don't have version 8 home edition (you got the installer from your company or college, etc.)  then you need to see the second post on thread as that's a crossgrade of products and won't work - you have uninstall the current v8 with the 'Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg' and then install v9.  It's all explained in more detail, with videos, in the thread.

    I hope that helps. :smileyhappy:

  • Sorry I took so long to reply. I never received a notice someone replied to my post. I thought I had checked "Email me..." but I guess I hadn't. I have uninstalled 9.0.8 but I am going to reinstall it and try your suggestions although having to turn off various protections seems to defeat the purpose. After running "Remove Sophos" from Spotlight I checked for files containing "Sophos". I found 36 which were .bom and .plist files I believe.

As far as which URLs any and all seem to slow, but sites like MacUpdate, Softpedia, even the Google home page. I've tried Firefox, Chrome and Safari. I think the slowdown seems much more apparent because I am on a 75mbs connection so without any protection pages load virtually instantly. With protection pages can take 5 secs or more to load.

I am going to reinstall and see what happens.

edit: I just did a clean install of 9.0.8 and the slowing of pages seems to have gone away. I suspect the 36 files I found may have been the culprit.

  • Did you leave those 36 files between the uninstall and reinstall or do something with them?

  • I deleted them before the reinstall.

  • OK, thanks for the info.  Not sure what the underlying problem was, but glad it's resolved for you.

  • apparently I spoke too soon. Sophos is back to slowing web browsing once again. Oh well, I tried.

  • Sorry about the problem.  We're will to troubleshoot this with you.

I'm asking our development team for comment on your issue.  Have you got an example URL that is very slow to load and always so?
