Using Sophos with Rapport

Does anyone know if there might be a conflict between Sophos and the NatWest internet banking protection software "Rapport" ?

I currently run both on my iMac and there doesn't appear to be a problem, but I am told you shouldn't have more than one anti-virus software installed?

  • The issue is regarding on-access protection, as two anti-virus packages may interfere with each other's ability to function (by attempting to lock a file locked by the other, deleting something the other is locking, creating privelege race conditions, viewing activity caused by the other as suspicious, etc.).  As far as I know, NatWest protection does not include on-access scanning, but instead looks at the security of your network connection, and should be OK.  It may have issues with Little Snitch or NoScript, but if you're not having problems currently with your setup, you are likely fine.

  • Andrew, Thanks for your help with the question regarding Sophos / Rapport. I notice a few users have a problem with the auto-update. I have experienced that too and it just says "unable to connect to primary server" or something like that. All I do is request an update and it usually manages to connect ok. It does appear to require an update extremely often though? is that normal? Also, each time it updates, is it making the Sophos file larger each time? or does it merely overwrite the original? I just imagine that with such regular updates the file would soon be massive.

    Thanks Rick

  • Hi Rick,

The software will check for updates every hour automatically. Updates will overwrite existing files as needed, so your installation won't get massive. It will certainly get a little bigger, but think "bigger by a few kilobytes" rather than "bigger by megabytes", and we regularly "groom" the full data set to reduce this growing effect on disk. I've been running our product on my laptop for years now, and its not really significantly bigger.

AutoUpdate actually does three different things: usually about 6 times a day, it grabs new detection data from Sophos.  Once a month, it downloads a new optimized detection data package, which rolls up all the detections from the past month into one streamlined file (smaller, and optimized for performance).  Lastly, it downloads product updates -- also usually once per month or so, sometimes more often if there's a bug fix.

As such, there is no "Sophos file," as there are many components installed all over your computer to provide complete protection.  The data package size does continually get larger, but we're talking kilobytes of data, which in this day and age won't even register on the Finder's "space left" index.
