  • You've just contacted the manufacturer :)

If you launch console.app and look at /Library/Logs/Sophos Anti-Virus.log, does it give more detail on the issue?

  • Thank you Andrew ,

    Bizarre!

/log/sophos shows nothing for several days; there is no record of any of what I describe.

  • From the error, it sounds like it was unable to contact our network to verify the MD5 sum of the software.  Is it still giving the same error?

    :1004421
  • Yes  , persistent over several weeks.

    Only on this machine.

Not on others on the network

    thanks

  • I just experienced a similar issue on my own home computer... for me, the problem was resolved when I isolated another process that was using one of the OS's cryptography libraries, but was sitting waiting for a prompt.  As it was a faceless application, this wasn't very obvious.  Since it started up and restored prior to Sophos AutoUpdate kicking in during the boot process, a reboot didn't fix anything.  Once I had terminated the process using Activity Monitor, Sophos AutoUpdate immediately updated.

So, it appears the updater relies on something that can be locked by another process.

  • My Sophos A-V for Mac Home Edition won't update either, and I don't know how to use Activity Monitor to figure out what may be preventing the update process. Can anyone help?

  • Checked Console App. Got the following:

Error:    Could not contact primary server at 07:16 on 23 November 2011
    com.sophos.autoupdate:     Server was not available

    After installing the current version of the A-V software, at least I'm no longer getting;

Error:    Could not contact primary server at 07:02 on 23 November 2011
    com.sophos.autoupdate:     Access was denied

  • Try restarting your computer with the resume feature disabled... to go any further, we'd need to know what error Sophos was logging in Console.app.
