Sophos Antivirus 9.0.8 "could not contact primary server"

I'm using the home edition of SAV 9.0.8 on a Mac running OSX Mavericks 10.9.2.  Starting about ninety minutes ago, SAV has failed to download updates and displayed the "x"ed out shield logo.  The console shows the following messages:

com.sophos.autoupdate: Updating catalogue information at 15:58:06 05 April 2014
com.sophos.autoupdate: Catalogue updated at 15:58:07 05 April 2014
com.sophos.autoupdate: Download started at 15:58:07 05 April 2014
com.sophos.autoupdate: Error: Failed to download packages at 15:58:12 05 April 2014
com.sophos.autoupdate: Error:    Could not contact primary server at 15:58 on 05 April 2014
com.sophos.autoupdate:     URL is invalid

...and then I get a "Could not contact primary server" URL Error status window.

Rebooting both my Mac and my router hasn't done anything.  Uninstalling and reinstalling SAV and then manually updating initially seemed to work, as I got a download progress bar and increasing download amounts, but when I took my eye off the screen it went back to "Could not contact primary server". The same messages popped up in the console as before, with the following (presumably pro forma) lines before it:

com.sophos.autoupdate: Sophos AutoUpdate
com.sophos.autoupdate: Version 9.0.8
com.sophos.autoupdate: Copyright Copyright 1989-2013 Sophos Ltd. All rights reserved.

Any idea what to do here?

  • Hi - like others I have had this problem, on a regular basis since first installing the home edition a month or so ago. I've tried reinstalling a couple of times, but with no success. I have got about as far as 140MB downloaded before the updater fails to contact the server.

Any further tips? Really appreciate the free nature of the software, but finding that I have no confidence in it on the basis that security software depends on being up to date.

    Any help appreciated.
