On Access Scanner Disabled on Computer Start-UP

When I start up my MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.4, the Sophos icon is gray.  Sophos opens upon start up (it is a start up item), but the icon is gray because the on-access scanner is not running.

If I go into preferences, the on-access scanner page has the security lock in the unlocked position, and it indicates the on-access scanner is not running, with no option for turning it on.  I do not know how the lock is being authenticated to unlock it, because I am not doing it.

The solution is to turn on my wi-fi and start the update process.  This immediately makes the on-access scanner start running.  Problem is when there are no wi-fi networks handy.  I work in the field quite a bit, so I do not always have wi-fi access.

When I check the console log, i am getting an almost continuous error message in my system log that reads as follows:

SophosAntiVirus: Error in SMTP Client, domain: 12, Code 8.

Something is clearly wrong.

  • I am having a similar problem on 10.7.4 running 8.06C. Sophos reports "on access scanning is disabled" but when I go to preferences, it says it's off and the button says "Stop scanning" and is grayed out. Unlocking the preferences doesn't make any difference.

I did a search for plutil and the only instructions I found (& the result of running those commands) were:

    1103Mac:~ Joel$ plutil -lint ~/Library/Application\ Support/Sophos\ Anti-Virus/Scans/Configurations/Scan\ This\ Mac.sksconf
/Users/Joel/Library/Application Support/Sophos Anti-Virus/Scans/Configurations/Scan This Mac.sksconf: file does not exist or is not readable or is not a regular file
    1103Mac:~ Joel$ plutil -lint ~/Library/Application\ Support/Sophos\ Anti-Virus/Scans/Schedules/Scan\ This\ Mac.skssched
/Users/Joel/Library/Application Support/Sophos Anti-Virus/Scans/Schedules/Scan This Mac.skssched: file does not exist or is not readable or is not a regular file

If I look in the folder mentioned by these commands the only file i see there is 'Scan This Mac ~ Joel.plist' which, if I run the plutil -lint command for that file, returns OK. What does that command do anyway?

I don't know if it's related, but I have been having a problem with 'helpd' crashing. Per forum instructions I found I renamed (rather than deleted) the ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpd folder and I think it resolved that problem. The only reason I mention it is that I don't believe in coincidences. I suspect that these two problems were either caused by the same event or one problem has caused the other.
