On Access Scanner Disabled on Computer Start-UP

When I start up my MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.4, the Sophos icon is gray.  Sophos opens upon start up (it is a start up item), but the icon is gray because the on-access scanner is not running.

If I go into preferences, the on-access scanner page has the security lock in the unlocked position, and it indicates the on-access scanner is not running, with no option for turning it on.  I do not know how the lock is being authenticated to unlock it, because I am not doing it.

The solution is to turn on my wi-fi and start the update process.  This immediately makes the on-access scanner start running.  Problem is when there are no wi-fi networks handy.  I work in the field quite a bit, so I do not always have wi-fi access.

When I check the console log, i am getting an almost continuous error message in my system log that reads as follows:

SophosAntiVirus: Error in SMTP Client, domain: 12, Code 8.

Something is clearly wrong.

  • Do you have email alerts set for the product?  I would have guessed that the problem was to do with Live Protection being enabled but your network connection being disabled, but this isn't what the logs say.  Llive Protection requires an internet connection in order to function.

However, if the log is in the unlocked state, your plist files may be corrupted.  Search the forums here for plutil to find instructions on how to fix that issue.

You may also be experiencing update issues if you're running while not connected to the internet; if everything isn't fixed by the first two items, this would be something else to check.

  • I am having a similar problem on 10.7.4 running 8.06C. Sophos reports "on access scanning is disabled" but when I go to preferences, it says it's off and the button says "Stop scanning" and is grayed out. Unlocking the preferences doesn't make any difference.

I did a search for plutil and the only instructions I found (& the result of running those commands) were:

    1103Mac:~ Joel$ plutil -lint ~/Library/Application\ Support/Sophos\ Anti-Virus/Scans/Configurations/Scan\ This\ Mac.sksconf
/Users/Joel/Library/Application Support/Sophos Anti-Virus/Scans/Configurations/Scan This Mac.sksconf: file does not exist or is not readable or is not a regular file
    1103Mac:~ Joel$ plutil -lint ~/Library/Application\ Support/Sophos\ Anti-Virus/Scans/Schedules/Scan\ This\ Mac.skssched
/Users/Joel/Library/Application Support/Sophos Anti-Virus/Scans/Schedules/Scan This Mac.skssched: file does not exist or is not readable or is not a regular file

If I look in the folder mentioned by these commands the only file i see there is 'Scan This Mac ~ Joel.plist' which, if I run the plutil -lint command for that file, returns OK. What does that command do anyway?

I don't know if it's related, but I have been having a problem with 'helpd' crashing. Per forum instructions I found I renamed (rather than deleted) the ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.helpd folder and I think it resolved that problem. The only reason I mention it is that I don't believe in coincidences. I suspect that these two problems were either caused by the same event or one problem has caused the other.

  • It does sound like your caches folder may have been corrupted.  You may need to remove ~/Library/Caches/com.sophos.sau as well --might be good to uninstall first, then re-install afterward.  You may also want to run disk utility to verify that your drive isn't corrupted.

  • I am not some computer wiz that should have to go around cleaning up cache files.  This problem all started when Sophos came out with its latest update, and I think Sophos needs to fix it, as it seems a lot of people are having this problem with the on-access scanner not workig properly.

  • Hi there,

My on access scanning is greyed out. I get alerts saying Sophos is off. I have unlocked the lock in preferences and tried to reset it and it doesn't work.

I have reinstalled sophos and at first it looked on and is not the same problem.

Please let me know what to do !

I have restarted my mac several times since the new install

    Thanks!

  • Hi!

    Same problem here.

Uninstalled with Sophos Uninstaller, reinstalled the latest download. On-Access scanning is active now.

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling seems to only fix the on-access scanner is disabled errors for a while but it keeps coming back for me. I still can't get a permanent solution to this running 10.7.4 and the latest version of Sophos.

  • Well, I just successfully got this message for the first time -- and I had on-access intentionally disabled at the time.  Upon updating the software, I received that message, and then found that the lock in the preferences tab wouldn't unlock, like so many others on here have experienced.  Are these two isues related for others as well?

    :1009848
  • I can unlock the lock but I can't change the on-access scanner is off.

    :1009874
  • I uninstalled and reinstalled to get round that problem
