Mountain Lion/Retina MacBook gets about half way through and disappears

I have a Mountain Lion/Retina Mac Book with about 1700000 files.

After it gets about halfway through the scan, the Sophos window disappears without comment. When I start Sophos again, it says I have never done a scan, so I start it again. I tried this about five times. I took notes the last time:

1605852 1:13pm (big pause)

1605827 1:37 pause

963024 3:07 very long pause - adt-bundle-mac-x86_64.zip

836746 3:38pm

Another product reported finding one case of JS.obfus-218, but other than that, my system was clean.

When I looked in the system log, I saw terminated: 15 associated with Sophos.

I suggest you to *temporarily* turn off scan inside archives and compressed files, on-access scanner and auto-update checking.

Thanks. I turned the things off that you suggested and it gave me a clean scan in a few hours. Now I've turned on just the "scan inside archives and compressed files" and I'll see how that goes. I do have quite a few zip files, each with a different password, due to some of the sort of work that I do.
