Message says "Sophos Anti-Virus is not running"

This has happened to me twice—once on my Mac, and again on someone else's. Both times, reinstalling Sophos Antivirus fixed the problem, which has not recurred since then.

I just re-installed Sophos, seemed to work until a re-start of the laptop.  Interesting that Sophos stopped working on both laptops as soon as I installed Office 2011 on them.  Any correlation? 

That's a question for Sophos, obviously. I've had no further trouble since reinstalling the app in June. My Mac is also a Microsoft-free zone. 

I am getting the same error. Just installed osx 10.7.5 and error keeps popping up. i use a university laptop, and our tech support was not able to figure out. they said there are others having the same issue. it is very iritating to keep getting pop up window when trying to work. is there something to do that does not require too much more time than deleting the program to fix?

Yes, same problem.  iMac running 10.7.5.  Per Activity Monitor process running are:

Sophos Anti-virus, user me, .1% CPU

Sophos Anti-virus, user root, 0% CPU

SophosAutoUpdate, user root 0% CPU

Sophos UIServer, user me, 0% CPU

intercheck, user root, 0% CPU

In Sophos Preferences I can not turn on, The on-access scanner and I can not Restore Defaults to do that either..

This all seems disconcerting.

AND, I have a Virtual Machine running Windows7 using VMware Fusion.  I have no antivirus on that machine.

I am not sure when this problem started.

I have read your comments, and reread your comments.  It would seem that your company has developed "free" software that now works for some and does not work for others.  That is disconcerting to those of us who have trusted your product to perform as advertised.  Looking at cnet, I see other products that are available and this may be the direction that many of us may turn to, to avoid living in the world of uncertainty.  From a marketing standpoint, having unhappy participants seems counter productive to increasing your client base.  Your company may, at the moment, hold the market but at some point this may not be the case, and part of that may just be due to the fact that there has been little response to the issue presented in this thread.  The, what seems to me, take it and use it if you wish, but don't expect help if there are issues approach, seems disengenuous.

Am I hearing that we should be greatful for what we have, but don't expect any immediate help for those who are concerned?

I got the same problem just taken notice to it, so whats the deal ?? I have also uninstalled and reinstalled and still say On-Access is Disabled.

Huh?  I don't understand any of this.  I got a message that sophos isn't working and now it's disappeared and never runs anymore. I am smarter than the average bear but don't know a lot about computer technicalities.  I went with MAC after another PC crashed in 3 years and have already had to replace hard drive on MAC.

I have also just got this message today, I'm on 10.8.2. My shield is grayed out. In activity monitor I have three process, Sophos Anti-Virus, SophusAntiVirus and SophusUIServer. In preferences the on access scanner is off. But I can't set it to on, when I try I get an popup box, "on-access Scanner failed to set preferences". In the about box it reads threat detection engine (null), Threat data: (null).

Not sure what has happened I've had it installed for many months, any ideas on what to do/try to get it re-started for on-access scanning?
