Will not uninstall from my Mac!

So im trying to switch from Sophos over to Avast antivirus software on my Mac because im finding Sophos to be ineffective and avast had higher ratings. When I ran the remover app that came with Sophos, it did absolutely nothing. It said it removed it, but the Apps were still in my Applications folder. I then tried using AppCleaner to remove it, but when I tried to install Avast, it says it cant install because Sophos was installed. So I tried to install Sophos again, and it says it could not install because an older version is installed. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Strange the uninstaller did "absolutely nothing" :smileyfrustrated:

If you're willing: I'd suggest reinstall SAV and then trying the removal app again and post back what happens.  Otherwise I'd added a post to the uninstall thread below.

Oh and any feedback on why it's ineffective?  Too slient maybe so it looks like it's not doing anything :smileyvery-happy:.  From what I've read Avast tend to have higher false positives than other vendors - just MHO.

Assuming you're running MacOSX.9 on a recent model Mac I would repeat the procedure with a slight twist:

after dragging SAV from the Applications folder to AppCleaner, empty the Trash with Finder > Secure Empty Trash...

Then goto Applcations > Utilities > Disk Utility and Repair Permissions with Disk Utility > Verify > [name of your Mac] > Repair Permissions. This process can take from a couple minutes upto a couple hours if you've never done it before*.

When finished reboot your Mac and see if you can now install Avast.

Please let us know how you fare.

*which is why I do Repair Permissions a few times a year as an integral part of clean up and backup maintenance chores.
