Getting "Could not update Sophos Anti-virus" for SAV Mac version 8

I have an old PPC Mac (which is my old secondary machine) using OS X 10.4.11 running Sophos 8.0.6C.  I would like to get the latest anti-virus definitions before support ends for version 8.

It looks like there is a problem downloading the definitions (or installing them):

Is this the latest anti-virus definitions?

Thanks for any help

  • You mentioned on the other thread about a problem with the computer.  I'm not saying this did cause the install of SAV to 'break' but there could have been some impact.

Generally in these situations an uninstall and reinstall should be tried.  However the installer isn't available as the product is being retired in literally a couple of weeks and even if this issue could be resolved updates would stop too.

As  said on the other post, there really isn't any point trying to fix this.

If you need any help uninstalling the product see this thread...

  • True, Apple will no longer be providing security updates for my computer, and Sophos AV updates will also stop.  I guess my concern is this -  if I am going to keep this computer (and still use it for low-priority kinds of things), I'd like to have the AV definitions updated to the 2014 definitions (instead of what I think is the 2012 definitions that it currently has).

Since I didn't find an installer for Sophos 8 on my Mac, I guess I had downloaded it 'live' from the web (sigh).  Even if I had found the installer, it would have old AV definitions, and if I still couldn't update them, I'd be in worse shape than I am currently in.

There do appear to be PPC AV alternatives to Sophos out there, some of which I have never heard of.  It does look like an older Symantec AV version for PPC still supports current AV updates, but I don't know if I can still purchase that old version anywhere.  (I guess I still have the alternative to hook my old computer to my 'current' Mac in Firewire mode and scan it that way, but that doesn't help with on-access scanning.)

Thanks for the free version of Sophos AV - I (and others) appreciate it.  I will likely still leave it on my old computer (unless I can find a reliable alternative), even with its current 2-year old AV definitions.

  • I can offer the suggestion that you take out a free trial of our Endpoint Anti-Virus...

    https://secure2.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-trials/enduser-protection.aspx

...and download a copy of the corporate SAV for Mac v8 (not Home Edition) as that says it still supports 10.4 on the website.

You can then uninstall the current copy and reinstall the fresh download, plug in your temporary evaluation credentials, run and update.  After a few weeks the installation will stop updating and you can stop it automatically checking in but that's it.
