SophosUIserver cannot be opened because of a problem

Dialog box with this title opens every few seconds or when I try to launch a program. Cannot uninstall or update Sophos. Very few programs work. Macbook Air running OSX rendered useless. Tech Support cannot support Mac. Please help?

There are a few posts in the forum about this issue, including instructions on manually removing the SophosUIServer component.
