SOPHOS ICON PULSATING/"Checking Primary Server"

Greetings All,

I have an iMac with OS 10-7-4 installed.

The Sophos Icon in the upper right of the screen is black & the "fingers" on the left side of the Icon are pulsating.

When I place the cursor over the Icon "Checking primary server" appears.

Can anyone enlighten me as to what this means, please.

Cheers

  • First of all, it means you're using SAV 7 instead of SAV 8, as the icon has changed for SAV 8.

Secondly, it means it is checking our servers for updates -- either detection data, component updates, or product updates.  Detection data is generally updated around every 4 hours, depending on the detection updates that need to be pushed out.  The product is set by default to check the server for updates every hour.

    I hope this helps!

  • Thanks for your help, Andrew,

I was about to download & install SAV Version 8 but thought I should check if I need to uninstall Version 7. - Or will the installation process itself "remove" Version 7.

I have looked through the discussions & elswhere but cannot find the answer.

  • Hello Malcom,

v8 should install "over" v7 - the installer will attempt to remove an existing installation

  • Greetings,

                      This afternoon I v8 & updated to 8.0.4c.

Then disconnected Time Machine  & ran the "Scan Now".

Showed approx 825,000 items & ran for 1hr 32mins - showing " No threats detected" message at end.

Light grey Shield now sitting at top of screen.

Please confirm my feeling that all is now well.

    Many thanks

  • The good news is that you appear to have no malware on your machine.  The bad news is that if the shield is grey, on-access scanning is not enabled, so you have no live detection.  Are you able to enable on-access scanning via the Preferences window?

  • Hello, Andrew,

The SOPHOS Icon still seems to be grey but System Preferences shows that "On Access Scanning" is enabled - The radio button is green. I did try to attach a Screen Print but this does not seem possible.

    Please advise.

    Thanks for your support.

  • Further to my post of June 7, I would appreciate some comment.

As  further  information the Sophos Icon at the top of screen is the shield with an "S" in it. The Icon appears to be grey rather than black but is the same shade as everything else up there e.g. Time Machine icon.

The Blue Shield icon with the "S" is in the dock.

    Look forward to some enlightenment.

  • We may need a screenshot, as my TM icon, sound icon, date and time, etc. are all distinctly black, as is my Sophos icon with an S in the middle.  When I disable on-access scanning, my Sophos shield goes light grey, just like my Bluetooth icon is when Bluetooth is off.

  • Hullo, Andrew,

Wanted to send screen shot but can not work out how to attach it.

  • You'll have to post it to an image hosting service and link the URL using the image link button in the text editor, I believe.
