On-Access Scanning not working - any ideas?

According to "Agile" in a different post - "The main component of  Sophos Anti-Virus does on-access scanning, meaning whenever a file is created, read, or written to, the contents will be scanned. "  which i find worrying because my copy of Sophos (8.0.3   but also previous versions) steadfastly refuses to allow me to switch the On-Access Scanning mode on.

I have recently upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3 on my Mac but i am fairly sure the On-Access scanning stopped working before that. I know it used to work, and was quite surprised one day when a message popped up telling me it was no longer activated. Since then i have been unable to activate it again.

Even tried re-installing an older v7 copy of Sophos and whilst it did appear to work for an hour or so, I noticed later that the version had upgraded itself to v8 and the scanning was off again.

So can anyone suggest what could possibly be the problem and what the solution is?

  • Are you logged in with an administrator account?  I can't see why this would happen (especially auto-upgrading from V7 to V8, as that's not happening for me yet) -- have you installed the software from two different accounts on the same computer?

  • yes - i use admin account.

I also tried to set the preferences whilst in root user account, but that made no difference.

I'm not sure what you mean by "have you installed the software from two different accounts on the same computer?"

do you mean user accounts on the mac? - i always use just the one account.

I used the uninstall app to remove sophos before downgrading to v7- this worked for a while but then stopped after a week or so.  Thinking about it again, when i read a few days back that v8 had been updated, i downloaded and re-installed it only to find the download was still on the previous version, and the auto update took another day or so to reach 8.0.3.

  • So the main points are:

    1) Upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.7.3 (and now 10.7.4)

    2) Upgraded from 7.3.11 to 8.0.2 (now 8.0.3)

Last week when I upgraded from 10.7.3 to 10.7.4, my upgrade went funny -- computer didn't restart, and I discovered that little things like the volume keys on my keyboard stopped working.  I then downloaded the 10.7.4 combo update from Apple (instead of re-triggering the software update) and re-ran the update.  After that, everything was fixed again.

I don't see why this would affect on-access scanning, but all the glitches I had on my system were odd at best, so it might be worth a try to download and apply the combo update too.

  • not quite!

I have only upgraded to mac 10.7.3 - will not be doing the 10.7.4 upgrade as there are too many reported problems with attached raids that i cannot risk it.

I was originally running v8 and only downgraded to v7 when OnAccess Scanning ceased to be operative.

This worked for a short while.

When it stopped working again, i checked this forum and spotted that sophos had updated so i downloaded and reinstalled v8. That has not fixed the problem.
