scan quietly abandoned

I'm running OS10.8.5 and Sophos 8.0.21C; Energy Saver is not set to induce sleep mode when there is no input. I've tried to run a number of scans over the past week or so, but the last scan Sophos recognises was in October. On each occasion the scan starts and proceeds normally, but Sophos closes spontaneously after an hour or so before the scan is finished.

Does the scan log reveal anything?

Not that I could understand, though I'm not an expert.
However, I've since installed Sophos v 9.0.6. I used it successfully for a limited scan which identified 8 infected files, and deleted them. I then launched a scan of my backup external drive to check that all was okay there. That was on Saturday morning. Since Saturday evening (it is now Monday morning) it has been scanning continuously on one single item: is this normal?

If the file is large, or contains a lot of smaller files - yes, the scanner can look like it has stalled while it works through the file.

It's still scanning the same file: Saturday to Wednesday evening now. Are you sure it's okay?

That's quite a while for just one file. What file is it stuck on? Does it say in the Scans window and can you screenshot it (Cmd + shift + 4 + spacebar)?

Are you using this button from the toolbar above the reply box...

There was a script called "lithium" which was blocked by my NoScript security app. I have now unblocked it.
