Is there any Virus or Spyware that makes iPad vulnerable?

In Sophos News, I see nothing on iPad. Am I missing something? Am running iOS 5.1 (regrets for misstating the OS a minute ago).

  • Hello RxDdude,

I'm not an expert so this is just my personal unprofessional opinion. Searching nakedsecurity for iPad turns up a number of posts, some of them related to security. Reading them I'd infer that iOS devices (as long as not jailbroken) are comparatively safe. Malware is a business and "development efforts" are dictated by potential ROI and iPads are not "cheap" targets. Given that applications have to be approved "spyware" is, although not absolutely non-existing, very rare (and doesn't survive for long once detected). Of course you can fall to scams, phishing and the like (and there one could need some additional protection). Apart from this the by far greatest risks are weak security settings, physical access to the iPad by others (including plugging them to unknown devices) and jailbreak.

  • iPad is an iOS device; everything not made by Apple on iOS devices runs in its own sandbox...

...and you can guess what good an AV scanner would be when running in its own sandbox.

However, we do have an iOS management product that would work on iPads just like it does on iPhones, and we also have an app that will bring the latest security data to your iPad.

  • TNX, Andrew, I'll check that out. I have already installed the news app and I like it. But, it's my wife's iPad, it's greatly beloved, and I can't touch it without clearance first ...
