Manual cleanup - move - delete does not work!

your directions for manual cleanup are

  1. Create a custom scan
  2. Select the areas where the remaining threats reside and add these to the Scan Items
  3. In the Options tab, select 'Delete threat' from the drop down menu
  4. Click Done
  5. Run the scan
this does not work!
i have tried several times selecting both move and delete options in the custom scan
the files are neither moved nor deleted
i'm on a g4 powerbook using 10.4.11

  • Hello Des,

You won't find the files as they are in an archive - for the first line the archive is probably the file 7bb99554-140759ce in the /20 folder of the /6.0 cache folder. So simply drag the /6.0 folder to the custom scan's Scan items window (or use + to browse for it), select Scan inside archives in Options and Clean up and then Delete as actions. This should do it. Note that the target OS is Windows for all the threats so they shouldn't cause harm anyway. Also note that it's a cache so if they are deleted you won't miss them.

BTW: did you also notice the Please send us a sample in the Action tab?

  • I've already posted a msg on this topic, but I will ask it here as well.

What is the difference between "clean up threat" and "Delete threat"? Are they not the same thing?

    thx

  • Your question is simple enough. I wish it had been answered as I have the same question. So, why do they invite us to ask questions if they intend to ignore our questions?

  • If you search, you'll find I've already answered this one :)

Clean Up -- Viruses attach to legitimate files.  Clean Up cleans the viral infection from the infected file.

Delete -- Deletes the file flagged as infected.

For Trojans, worms, and other similar malware, the end result is the same, as it's the actual file that is the problem.

For Office Macro infections, Application viral infections, and other cases where the original file should NOT be deleted, there is a difference.

Clean Up will not always work on files located within archives, which includes .dmg files, as well as .zips, .pkgs, .jars, .docx, and .sparseimages.

  • same thing is happening to me.  I get a Mal/Generic-L   clean up manually, I do it and nothing happens. Its on MY Book, timemachine driven, I can see the file. Can I just delete it? What do I do?

  • Yes; you can temporarily disable on-access and just toss the file in the trash -- or if it's in Time Machine, enter time machine, right click on the file and delete all backups.
