Access denied on install

I am working on a computer for a guy at work. He said that it was running extremely slow, especially on the internet. I brought it home and did some quick cleanup of tool bars and programs that run at startup for no real good reason. I noticed that his anti-virus was expired and figured I would install one after getting the machine running better.

I decided to start with Malwarebytes. Downloaded the latest version and ran the install. I get an error message that it cannot access the temp file to extract the files to. I decide to move on to and anti-virus thinking I had a bad download. Did the same thing for Microsoft Security Essentials and received the same error. That is when I started thinking about a root kit.

Downloaded the Sophos tool and have received the same error. Any ideas?

  • Thanks for the response.

It is the user temp folder that the install is trying to access and is denied. I have verified that the user does have administrator rights. I will check the security on the folder and see if something is screwy there.

I appreciate the suggestion on the process monitor and will give that a shot when I get home tonight.
