Access denied on install

I am working on a computer for a guy at work. He said that it was running extremely slow, especially on the internet. I brought it home and did some quick cleanup of tool bars and programs that run at startup for no real good reason. I noticed that his anti-virus was expired and figured I would install one after getting the machine running better.

I decided to start with Malwarebytes. Downloaded the latest version and ran the install. I get an error message that it cannot access the temp file to extract the files to. I decide to move on to and anti-virus thinking I had a bad download. Did the same thing for Microsoft Security Essentials and received the same error. That is when I started thinking about a root kit.

Downloaded the Sophos tool and have received the same error. Any ideas?

  • Hi,

Assuming the account you're logged on as is an administrator and you're not dealing with UAC, it sounds like the security on the temp folder(s) has been changed.

I'm not sure if the problem you have is with the system temp, E.g. "C:\windows\temp\" or with the users temp "%temp%" (This maps to something like "C:\Users\[account]\AppData\Local\Temp") but typing %temp% into Start -> Run, will open the correct directory or should.

Either way, I would check that the account you are logged on as can write to both of the above locations as it should be able to and if not check the security of those directories.

If it's a little more subtle than that, try running ProcessMonitor (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx) whilst running the installers, Once you get the error stop ProcessMonitor capturing, then scroll to the top and search down for DENIED.

    Regards,

    Jak

  • Thanks for the response.

It is the user temp folder that the install is trying to access and is denied. I have verified that the user does have administrator rights. I will check the security on the folder and see if something is screwy there.

I appreciate the suggestion on the process monitor and will give that a shot when I get home tonight.
