Malware: ...facebook...php?

Hi, iMac with Sophos AntiVirus for Mac Home Edition here. Two nights ago, while browsing www.bikeradar.com, a box popped up saying '...facebook....php' was trying to open something. It was if I was trying to upload a file. I clicked cancel, closed Firefox and Mail, and performed a scan. Sophos found no threats, but I want to understand what happened and why. Is this something I should worry about? Or, just an add on the site with bad code? Thanks!

It's difficult to tell what it might have been, but likely it was simply something misconfigured on their website. It doesn't sound like something malicious, you are probably just fine. Chester

I figured as much, but I just wanted to make sure. Is there anything in particular I should look out for? Either computer behavior or to prevent this in the future? Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

Protecting against a virus, and malware etc.. is such a headache, I guess we have to pay the price for wanting to be being online.

I'm interested in this topic as a new iMac user (former PC owner) and was wondering if Mac's need anti-virus as much as PC's? If anti-virus is needed for Macs, does the free version of Sophos AntiVirus for Mac Home Edition have enough protection, or is there a paid version with more bells and whistles?

with Macs - or Mac users - nowadays being targeted the same way as Windows users the risk is non-negligible and as much is rather an academic question. Note that Sophos offers a paid version only for enterprises and the HE is identical in terms of protection (and has its own forum at SophosTalk).

I've been advised by Mac users and Apple support that I do not need either anti-virus or anti-malware software running. Is that true?
