sophos shield icon change

I've had the free Mac Home Edition for quite awhile & the shield icon has always been solid black or blue with 3 bars on the side. About 3am this morning, I noticed the shield had changed & it's now got a white field with black outline & a black S (or sometimes a pulsing arrow) in the middle. I wasn't sure what was going on, so I went ahead and downloaded the newest Mac Home version, but the icon's still looking very Superman-ish. I've Googled and searched the forums, but can't find any mention of this change. Is this just a new icon?

  • Hello bevdoll,

the icon has been changed with version 8.x. If you view the log (provided the installer hasn't cleared the old entries) you'll likely find that that your SAV version has been upgraded from 7.x to 8.x recently (this has been announced here - although the icon hasn't been explicitly mentioned).

  • Wish I had gotten a notice. I thought "someone has hacked my Sophos" and removed and reloaded it.  That had me looking for a SHA-1 response to verify this download and could not find one.   Does anyone know how we can verify the authenticity of the Home Edition download?

  • AutoUpdate automatically verifies its downloads; if you're manually downloading the installer, the MD5 is available here: http://downloads.sophos.com/home-edition/savosx_he.md5

--which is why you were unsuccessful in finding the SHA-1 sum :)

  • Thx much! Glad to know it was supposed to do that...had been freaking out a little.

  • Hi Bevdoll,

Thanks very much for your feedback - I can understand your surprise and it was very wise of you to seek confirmation. I'll certainly take this kind of thing into account next time we do a major upgrade and make sure we provide better information. Because we don't require registration to run the software, we can't send this out in advance by email, so this forum will continue to be the best place to look for advance notice of future changes.

  • Aloha, Rich --
I had the same experience with the Sophos shield. At the time, I figured the new shield just indicated an update -- which in fact it did, according to what I've read here.
BUT ever since then, I've been having the same trouble that someone has on another thread: whenever I start/restart Sophos, my On-Access Scanner stops running. Furthermore, Sophos puts up a little window telling me that Sophos is not running at all, and that I don't have any virus protection. I'm running Tiger. Maybe, if it's possible, I should return to an earlier version of Sophos. Not sure how to do that, though.
Anyway, here's the money quote from my Anti-Virus Log: "com.sophos.intercheck: Fatal Error: Unable to configure virus detection engine [0x01800000]". The next line says "Sophos cannot continue."
Now, I *have* been able to get my on-access scanner to work (hopefully) by restoring the defaults. At least the red button turns back to green. If you have any advice/recommendations, or if anyone else here has some suggestions, I sure would like to hear them.
Many thanks for any help you can give.
