Drag and drop to custom scan

I've just done my first Sophos scan of my mac and it's showing 6 threats which need to be cleaned up manually. This is where I seem to have a problem as I cant seem to be be able to select the threats and drag them to the custom scans for it to delete them. I've opened up the help page titled "add a threat to a custom scan" but I cant seem to be able to drag the selected files using either of the two suggested methods - is it me just being thick or what?

Any suggestions greatly appreciated - thanks

  • Same problem for me. the files named are in my Time Machine backup, and I wonder if that is the problem, i.e. Sophos cannot automatically

delete problem files in Time Machine. That may explain why the manual techniques do not work.

I manually found some of the files in the backup and deleted them, but I cannot find other files. As long as they are not in my current system

    maybe I don't care.

It would be nice if a Sophos tech could address this problem????????????

  • The safest way to remove files from a Time Machine backup is via the Time Machine interface.  Sophos is VERY conservative about removing items from within Time Machine backups, as some TM configurations can break if some other interface messes with the file structure.

To remove malicious files from TM backups by hand, check the file path the detection indicates, and note the segment of the path that tells you which backup the file is in...

    eg: /Volumes/TMBackupDrive/Backups.backupdb/MyComputerName/2011-12-01-095144/MyHD/System/Library/Video/Plug-Ins/MaliciousFile.sh

This tells you to go to the Finder, hit command-shift-G, and enter /Volumes/MyHD/System/Library/Video/Plug-Ins/ into the location bar, and click "go".  Then, select Time Machine from the menu bar, and enter time machine.  Once in Time Machine, navigate to the date (in this case, Thursday, 1 December, 2011), right-click the file (MaliciousFile.sh), and select "Delete All Backups of 'MaliciousFile.sh'."

Exit Time Machine, and you're done!

  • i found the 15 ways to clean up my Mac OS X and followed up to number 11 and then came bogged down. Number 11 says that if there are any threats for which the action available is "clean u manually" create a custom scan. At this point I do not know how to create a custom scan so I am stumped. How does one creat a custom scan. I was able to delete all of the threats that said "cleanup" but cannot for the life of me figure ow to create a custom scan.

  • I'm new at this and I can't find the file I have to delete in the time machine, the application is no longer installed on my mac. I did find it in the volume but not in the time machine back up. What should I do?

    Thank you for your help

  • If you message me the path from the scan log, I'll send you back the location within Time Machine you need to navigate to to delete it.

  • Running Mac OSX10.5.8. Completed first scan of all local drives. (54 hours). Found 7 threats (all affecitng windows). Told that all require Manual cleanup. Can not  drag & Drop into Custom Scan window. Couldn't Copy & paste either.

  • There's a known bug in the built-in help -- drag and drop doesn't actually work.  This issue has already been raised with the product documentation group.

See http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/118117.aspx (linked on the upper right side of this website) for manual cleanup instructions.
