Macbook Air with Lion freezes during Time Machine backup...

I see a number of threads here with folks having stalling systems, but I have a situation where my Macbook Air completely freezes up (usually when Time Machine backup starts, or that's what I have observed when I wake the system up... the system wakes up, then freezes as Time Machine backup starts).

I logged a case with Apple and since they told me to remove Sophos Antivirus and since then my system has completely stabilized and I've not had a freeze in over a week (prior to uninstallation of Sophos my system was freezing up between 1 and 5 times a day).

Any ideas 'why' this is happening and if Sophos are aware of this and looking to patch/fix it?  Has anyone else experienced this issue and is it possible to run Sophos on Macbook Air/Lion or is there a compatibility issue?

Many thanks for any help/pointers!

  • Andrew,

Not that I am aware of. I'm happy to pretty much try anything at this point as all I know is that with Sophos uninstalled the Air runs fine, with it installed it freezes up straight away...  I'm convinced it's something to do with Time Machine and Sophos, but I'm not an expert by any stretch... it just 'seems' like every time we have a freeze it's around the time a Time Machine backup was starting... again, this is my perception and not based on concrete evidence...

Apple pointed to Sophos pretty much straight away, so they obviously saw something in the data capture that pointed them at Sophos...

Thanks again... Look forward to hearing from you.

  • I'm having the exact same issue.

  • I've got feedback from Dev: There is a known issue they are tracking against DEF73069; due to the location of the fix, it's targeted for the 8.0 release, which is due out sometime next calendar year.  The current workaround is to exclude the path to your time machine backup.

Still doesn't answer why it only hits some setups, but at least it'll be fixed.

  • Thanks Andrew. At least I know you are working on it :-)

Can you confirm how I implement the workaround. Do I just go to "On-access scanning" tab in preferences, click on "Excluded items" and then use the "+" sign to add my Time Machine backup drive?   ...or are you referring to something else?

    Many thanks!

  • That is precisely what you have to do!

  • OK, watch this space... I'll keep you posted and let you know if this works around the issue...  thanks Andrew...

  • So far so good... no freeze last night... if it makes it another night, then this workaround may well be the temporary answer :-)

    Thanks Andrew...

  • Greeting

I have MacBook Pro with Lion OS. I had the same problem. Whenever the Time Machine starts, my Mac hangs. I tried to execlude some directories from Sophos but no luck.

I finally solved the problem by disabling on-access scan from Sophos.

I think sophos interupting the TM during backup process. Sphos should allow TM process to access all the files during backup without scanning.

  • Just disable on-access scans on your TM drive for now -- disabling them in the on-demand section will not fix the problem.

  • When i disabled on-access scan on my TM directory, it did not solve the issue.

I have disabled on access scan completly, then the problem resolved.

I think the problem was not scanning the TM backup but preventing the TM from taking backups of other files because its process need to by scanned each time it access a file for backup.

    Best Regards
