Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

  • Mountain Lion, although it only supports processors capable of running 64-bit code, will still support Apps built as 32-bit binaries. Like many products from many different vendors, we have not had a compelling reason to switch to 64-bit binaries yet, other than for the core kernel components. A change of this magnitude is not to be undertaken lightly, and our preference right now is to put effort into feature development and overall usability.

Thanks for your question, and for using Sophos Anti-Virus.

  • With Mountain Lion released today, here's a brief update.

Before updating your Mac to Mountain Lion, please ensure that Sophos Anti-virus is running at least version 8.0.5 - preferably version 8.0.6.

The final Gold Master of Mountain Lion introduced an issue with version 8.0.5 which impacts our menu bar icon and pop-up messages. This problem is addressed in version 8.0.6 which is being rolled out this week.

Since writing this original note we have also had to change our plans with regard to the installer. We will continue to publish the old installer which is the preferred way to install Sophos Anti-virus on versions 10.4 to 10.7. There is a new installer for Mountain Lion that is compatible with Gatekeeper.

FWIW, running the GM of Mountain Lion, Sophos 8.0.5c updated itself to 8.0.6c and the icon also disappeared and could not be restored using the Sophos menu. However, rebooting restored the icon and it's been there through updates ever since, as it should be.

  • I'm also having the problem with the Sophos icon dissapearing from the menu bar with Mountain Lion and Sophos version 8.0.6c. Restarting the computer returns the icon but it disappears later on. Not sure if this is occuring at the hourly update or not.

  • but released a version that will not give this problem?

  • Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I have come across a few issues. Firstly, if I log on, the Sophos shield is sometimes not in the menu bar. On-access scanning is still enabled (InterCheck is running and it detects EICAR test file), but it's just reassuring to see it. I did go to the menu and select "Show Status in Menu Bar", but it would not work. Curiously, it was already checked in Sophos Preferences.

Also, occasionally, I get a "fatal error" in the console logs and it says that it is unable to configure virus detection engine. When this occurs, either the icon goes grey or totally disappears. In this case, there is no protection at all.

I did check the forums and there was a temporary "fix" where selecting "Update Now" would update the product and re-enable on-access scanning.

I assume this is because Mountain Lion is relatively new. Hopefully it will be fixed very soon.

EDIT: I checked above and an employee said that 8.0.5 had some issues with the status bar icon and notifications. I am running 8.0.6C but it still doesn't explain the fatal error and lack of on-access scanning.

After booting up today in ML with Sophos 8.0.6c, I did a manual update which ran longer than the usual download; an update began which involved deleting and reinstalling the application (the uninstaller wasn't affected), and ended up with the same version number. This time, however, a second manual update attempt removed the menu bar icon, which wouldn't return without a reboot.

  • I too am dealing with the disappearing Sophos icon in the menu bar. I also am having a problem where Mission Control goes away. I am noticing that this happens after the computer goes to sleep. I am not sure but that may be when I lose the Sophos icon. The two may be related to the computer waking from a simple sleep cycle. The way to correct the Mission Control problem is to restart the dock and then that comes back, unfortunately it doesn't correct the icon issue.

  • I have also had a problem in getting threats to be deleted autometically.

No matter how I set Preferences, threats are not deleted or cleaned as they arrive. I'm thinking of email attachments destined for Windows, which are usually harmless to Macs. I just want them dumped or cleaned and especially before Time Machine grabs a copy or two.
