Sophos Antivirus for Mac and OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion"

Earlier today, Apple announced that a new version of OS X, codenamed Mountain Lion, would be released in July 2012.

Sophos has been actively participating in the pre-release developer programs for this new OS version. While the product works well on the new platform, we have found that there are a few changes required to support Mountain Lion fully. These changes will be implemented in the July monthly release of Sophos Antivirus for Mac, which will be v8.0.5.

We fully expect this new version to be available in time for the release of Mountain Lion.

The most significant change is that the installer for the product will be signed by Apple. This will ensure compliance with the new Gatekeeper functionality, which requires that the digital signature for any software downloaded from the Internet is based on a certificate from Apple..

Unfortunately this process is not compatible with version 10.4 of OS X. Starting with v8.0.5 of Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition it will only be possible to perform a new installation on OS X 10.5 and above. Customers currently running our product on 10.4 will continue to receive updates and upgrades as usual via the AutoUpdate process.

This will not affect automated updates to existing installations.

There are no plans to make v7.x of Sophos Antivirus for Mac compatible with Mountain Lion. Home Edition users currently running v7.x will be automatically upgraded to v8.x during the month of July.

Thanks for using Sophos Antivirus for Mac Home Edition!

  • Hello Richard,

so all installations will be upgraded to 8.x, correct? Will the 7.x installer remain available for those running OS X 10.4? Even though 10.4 is quite old there might still be some who want to install SAV for Mac HE for the first time or need to reinstall (guess in this case 8.x should be manually uninstalled first).

  • Dear Richard,

I just have one question regarding what actions to take regarding mountian lion. I am running version 8.04, so will my version upgrade to 8.05 in July (which is needed for mountain lion) automatically or will I need to uninstall and then install version 8.05? Also, should I uninstall sophos prior to upgrading to mountain lion (and then re-installing) or can I jsut upgrade to mountain lion once I get version 8.05?

Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks, and have a great day.

  • Sophos minor point releases always auto-update as soon as they are available.  Those currently using 7.3.x will not autoupdate to the 8.x until Sophos is confident that this will not cause adverse effects.

I am currently using Sophos V 7.3.12C on a number Snow Leopard and Lion partitions with good results. I understand that there will shortly be an automatic and unavoidable upgrade of all Version 7 installations to Version 8.

I am also currently using Sophos V 8.0.5 on the latest Developer Preview of ML and note whenever Sophos does its first update, either automatically or "Update Now," the Sophos shield icon disappears from the menu bar and cannot be restored except by a reboot. Other functionality doesn't seem to be affected but I find the "state" feedback provided by that icon to be useful and would not want to lose it on my SL or Lion boot partitions.

Is that a known issue, does it also occur with SL and Lion, and are there plans to fix it?

FWIW, I installed the GM of Mountain Lion on my Developer Preview partition, Sophos V 8.0.5 updated and the menu bar Icon didn't disappear (!). However, after I ran "Update Now" as a test, a full download (i.e., the entire Sophos install package) was slowly downloaded and installed, and after that, the menu bar icon disappeared again. The only difference I could see between the two installations in About Sophos Anti-Virus was that the threat detection engine before the full update was, if I remember correctly, 3.33.3, while after the full update, it was 3.33.2.

  • For what it's worth, I am seeing the same behavior.  I have submitted a bug to Apple on this behabior but it isn't obbious that it is a Mountain Lion issue.

  • Same here.  Shield disappears with the GM build of 10.8.    The release notes for 8.0.5 only really indicate the *installer* is compatible -- but not necessarily the software, though...

(DEF82226) Updated installer to ensure compatibility with Mac OS X Mountain Lion (OS X version 10.8).

  • Hello all,

Thanks very much for reporting this issue. We had experienced a very similar issue with the previous developer releases of Mountain Lion that we fixed in 8.0.5. Unfortunately Apple have changed something at the last minute with the GM build that has caused either a recurrence of the problem, or another problem with very similar symptoms.

We are investigating this as a high priority and still hope to have a fully functional version of the product ready when Mountain Lion is released. In the meantime, this issue only impacts visible notifications and we are confident that the protection, including on-access scanning, is not compromised.

    Best wishes,

    Rich

My original report of the issue involved both ML DP4 plus its minor updates and Sophos v 8.0.5 so it appears the pre-ML GM fix you mentioned wasn't working for everyone.

On the other hand, the Sophos v 8.0.5 installation that had this problem was in place when I installed ML GM over DP4 and the problem with Sophos appeared to have been resolved. It was only after Sophos reinstalled itself from what was a large enough download to have been a complete installer (not just a virus signature update), that the problem returned, even though the version number didn't change.

  • Thanks VERY much for the info... BUT, Since I've been auto-updated to ver. 8.0.5C of Sophos, all four components (UServer, AutoUpdate, AntiVirus and Anti-Virus) still run as 32-bit streams. Now this is on OS/X 10.6.8..... Will it automatically become 64-bit streams when I upgrade to Mountain Lion next week??

    Thanks in Advance..
