Need Recovery Instructions for Mac and PC

I have read every document on this site and cannot find anything that explains how to recover the data should the system die or become unbootable. For example if we have a logic board go out on one of our macs we would normally sled the drive and pull the data off. We have backed up recovery keys and created machine specific recovery media.

Thanks for your help.

  • I can't really answer about the Mac side, but on the PC side (Specifically with SafeGuard Enterprise), Sophos has pretty comprehensive documentation about recovery procedures.  Check out the PDF attached to this KBA:

I can tell you from experience that the keyrecovery method does work pretty well, and slaving the hard drive to a machine running SGN also works great.

    Hi MC,

Thank you for posting your question in the SophosTalk community forums. Great question regarding data receovery for Sophos Mac encryption.

You should be able to find everything you need in this document, section 3.2.1. The only caveat is this note from the guide:

Note: In case of the users authentication data you have to export these data each time you add users or modify their credentials in order to keep your back-ups up to date. In case you updated the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption software on your Mac it is also necessary to export the kernel again.

Please let us know how it turns out.

  • I am also interested in mac recovery options. i was not able to get to the link provided in the previous post.

Like the OP mentioned, if the mac is not bootable usually one try target disk mode or use a sled.

Is it possible to decrypt/access the data off a nonbootable encrypted mac os hard drive?
