Thanks very much for all the responses. Unfortunately I am unable to update the software. That needs to be done by our corporate IT group. Until they decide to move to that version there's not much I can do to update the software. Maybe I'll see if I can get them to allow an uninstall and reinstall.

Have logged a call with Sophos for this (and posted the same problem last week). We are using v5.40 (+ patch) and still get this error from time to time (some machines worse that others).
Did you manage to resolve your problems?
