Web Appliance v3.4.5

Hi,

My company has an interanet, that everybody on the domain has access too, its was created using Sharepoint on a SBS2008 server. On the intranet, i am trying to embed video's from other sites, but the Web Appliance is blocking people from being able to view the video. We have streaming media blocked, so i allowed streaming media but made youtube a globelly blocked website, so that users can't get the youtube. what i want to know is, is there a way i can allow users to view the video that is embedded in on the intranet website, without allowing them access to that website? I am new to Sophos web appliance, so any help or a point in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

  Scott

  • Hello Scott,

A page request is typically made up of many small requests for various elements such as JPG files, CSS files or HTML.  When a category is blocked, all of these small requests are blocked as you've experienced.

It may be possible to do this depending on the site that is hosting the video.

If a site allows you to access their content directly, via one HTML link, you could add this to your Configuration -> Local Site List -> Add Site.  You can either "Globally allowed sites" this link, or create a new tag and create a policy using this tag to allow the video.  This will override the category block for that one element.

The one catch is that most sites with video content will probably not allow you to do this.  Youtube, for example, embeds many different elements such that this is not easy.  Since some of these sites generate revenue based on banner ads accompanying the video, they are going to do their best to make sure the advertisements are viewed and prevent hotlinking.

If you can analyze the HTML code of your video site, and find the direct link, try adding it to the Local Site List.  Your milage will vary for this and it may be an extremely complex task based on how the video site is coded.

    Cheers,

    MarkJD.
