Puremessage as IIS SMTP Gateway

In a Puremessage IIS SMTP (front end) + exchange 2007 (backend) configuration,  what would happen to the emails that have been processed by PureMessage in the event the exchange 2007 went down? Can puremessage retain the emails and release them once the exchange is back online?

    From looking at this some months ago, I think that the messages should build up in the queue folder of IIS: C:\inetpub\mailroot\Queue

    This folder is where the IIS SMTP gateway puts emails destined for the smart host.
