Safest Browsing Options For Kids

Hi guys, I have been using Astaro at work for over 10 years and recently stood up a gateway at home.  I have enabled web filtering to keep my young children from growing up too fast [:)]  Things work pretty well, but there are two things I would like to finalize.  1.  I would like to force all google searches through google's search site for schools (more info here https://support.google.com/websearch/answer/186669?hl=en) and then block all other search engines.  2.  I would also like to use youtube's school option (more info here https://www.youtube.com/schools).  Has anyone ever tried implementing these options in UTM 9?  Thanks in advance for the help.

    First thing is your need HTTPS scanning turned on, which means the Certificate Authority installed.

    In your Filter Action, Additional Options, you can turn on the Google, Bing, and Yahoo SafeSearch options.  I do not recall off the top of my head whether this also turns on YouTube Safety Mode - I don't think it does.

    The YouTube for Schools option can also be configured there - you'd have to have a YouTube School Account and ID, please be aware that this feature may not be exactly suited to your needs.

    All of these options just turn on the website's feature and prevent the users from turning it off.  The actual implementation is all from the website.  Sometimes with Google Safe Search things slip through - and that is up to Google.

    Shutting down other search engines is a lot more difficult.  What is to stop someone creating newsearchengine.com and your kids start using it?  And trying to block something like yahoo will block a lot more than searches.  You could try blocking the search engine category and then allowing certain sites but that is prone to unintended side effects.  What happens if safekidsbooks.com has an search engine for searching their library but that it is implemented by Bing or some other engine.

    I recommend instead a monitor approach - which as a parent might be more useful rather than outright block.  You can get reports for all sites they visit that are categorized as Search Engines and then determine whether you should block them.  You can also get reports on search terms they are using (even if Google SafeSearch means they don't get results).

    If you're not familiar with OpenDNS, I would definitely check them out, they are free for home users, and offer excellent filtering, as well as phishing protection, and an online dashboard where you can view traffic. You just register an account and point everyone to their dns servers. I point everyone to the UTM and have it provide OpenDNS.

    Depending on your users' computer skills, you may want to write a PF rule that enforces all DNS route through only OpenDNS.

    As mentioned above, I would also actively monitor and never rely solely on technology to fulfill this need.

    I forgot to mention that if you are using OpenDNS at home and want the filtering and stats, you must have static ip or use a dynamic ip updater client (they have a free one).

    UTM has an OpenDNS updater built into the DynDNS area.
