Country of Facebook

Hi, 

I been working for the past several hours to gain  access to https:\facebook.com with no luck, until I disabled the blocking by country feature where I had most countries blocked.  Turns out it is in one of the blocked countries.

Now, has anyone had this issue or info on the countries that needs unblocked for Facebook to work while keeping the "block-by-country" feature turned on?  I've been watching at all the blocked traffic logs where the country block was applied and I can easily see a major reduction in traffic if I can keep this in place.

    You may want to review some of the recent (April-May 2014) threads about country blocking (GeoIP) and Google.

    The GeoIP database is updated once per month.  If a provider moves addresses, or changes addresses, the country information may be wrong.

    Also verify your DNS configuration and check the IPs coming back for facebook.

    I figured facebook is in the USA, but also uses IP's in China, and UK, and possibly even more countries, I think this has to do with the Akamai Content Delivery Network.

    In theory, the way a CDN works is that it looks at your IP (incoming IP) and then gives you content on a server that is geographically close to you.  Therefore if you are in the USA, most of the content will be from USA servers.  If you are in the EU, then the content is served from EU servers - for the exact same URLS and domain names.  However they basically reserve the right to give you content from anywhere.  For example if you are in the US and the US servers are busy you might get content from EU, Asia, etc.

    That being said, the recent Google problem appears to have been an error in one of the GeoIP databases, not a CDN issue.
