web filtering profiles not respecting web filtering exceptions

Hi,

as you can see in the subject: I created a web filtering profile so that my kids can surf really protected (whitelist).
This works (more or less) but the exceptions made in the global web filter exceptions are not regarded.
So windows update always gives an error while searching for updates and in the web filter log these addresses get blocked.

I think I read somewhere that "global" web filtering exceptions do their work even in profile mode.

Is that right? Where is my mistake? I am using the web filtering in transparent mode.

    You may be right Bob, I glossed over that part of the log. I think in this case since the whitelist method for the profiles are being used it may be something worth to try in adding a content filter exception to the windows exception.

    Hello dilandau,

    Ok, the reason for the block is "category", if you add "category" to the exception you already have it should pass the traffic. The current exception is only skipping av,ssl,file extension and size.

    *additional* It might be called URL filter, at least thats what it is on v8


    so I have to say: *Thank you so much* - what you wrote was absolutely correct and the best solution to this problem.
    Indeed there were only missing the two check marks (content and url filter) in the standard windows update exception in the web filter exceptions.
    Additionally I cloned the windows update entry to catch up the relatively new (since Vista) Microsoft Network Awareness which always looks up the url http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt
    Now everything is great. :-)



    Dilandau, don't you think that the issue is the server refusing to fulfill the request (statuscode="403")?

    I don't know why some people have this type of a problem and others don't.  I would start by adding DNS Group definitions for ds.download.windowsupdate.com and update.microsoft.com to the 'Skip transparent mode destination hosts/nets' box.

    Bob, thank you for your answer, too. As I wrote above, dilandau had the right idea. It was just simply about the content and url filter which weren't check marked in the default windows update exception in the web filter exceptions. ;-) But I really appreciate your doing here in the forums as you are a great supporter since many years. Thank you so much!

    Fits perfectly. ;-) Thanks again, dilandau. I over and overchecked all settings again and again, but I didn't get it. Now it's perfect and (you're right!) my whitelist for kids is working now. ;-)
