URL Filtering: Additional URLs/sites to block

I'm having trouble figuring out how to use this new method of allowing or blocking websites found on Web Filtering > URL Filtering > Additional URLs/sites to block.

In order to test whether I had it working correctly, I decided to try to block a site I really like. According to the documentation "you have to enter the entire domain name, including e.g. www."

So here is how I tried to block the site:
1. Clicked the + to Add a new rule.
2. Named the profile, and typed in (without quotes) "www.example.com"
3. Clicked Save
4. Clicked Apply

I then went to browse to that website and lo and behold - no blocking occurred. So I thought, perhaps I'm misreading something. So I then changed the rule to list "www.example.com" instead of just "www.example.com" and it still refused to block.

What am I doing wrong? This used to work before they added the regex patterns and now I can't figure out why it doesn't work. Tried searching the forum but couldn't find anything so I decided to post.

Can anyone help me with this?

    So, you're saying that everything used to work, but now doesn't?  When you look at 'LAN Settings' for your browser, is 'Use a proxy ...' checked?  Have you changed DHCP or your PAC file recently?

    Okay - so I figured out the cause but I guess I don't understand why it behaved as it did, so perhaps you could explain it to me.

    The problem was, I had switched the Web Filtering from Transparent Mode to Standard Mode. What I don't understand is when running in Standard Mode instead of Transparent mode, why does Sophos UTM allow a user to browse the internet without any filter at all if they decide not to enter the IP address for the web proxy? Shouldn't Standard mode block all all traffic that is not being routed through the web filter IP?

    Perhaps I've just got something misconfigured as to why that's happening, so any additional insight you could provide would be much appreciated!
