A/V Exceptions

Is is possible to have all PDF files skipped from the A/V scanning?

A lot of the sites our students and teachers visit are PDF files.  With the scanning turned on, the PDF is downloaded and scanned and then the user has to save then open the file or right-click on the on the icon and choose "Open in new window".

This really defeats the purpose of having the Acrobat Reader plugin installed to view the the document in IE.

Basically, I want any PDF file from any site to just display in the browser like a HTM file does instead of having to be downloaded first.

Is this something that can be easily accomplished?

    They should be able to left-click and open without saving, or have I misunderstood?

    Apparently.

    When you visit a site and click on a link to another page that is in HTML format, the page just displays.

    When they visit a site ( The McGraw-Hill Companies ) a lot of the links point to PDF files.  At their homes (and mine ) these pages just open in the browser.

    At work, they are required to download the file then open it.  Be that by right clicking then opening, or left clicking and opening, or what have you.  It does not just open in the window and it is causing them mass confusion.  And it is annoying.

    The Acrobat Reader has an option to load these files into the browser with nothing required other than clicking on the link on the page.

    I submitted a ticket to support about this and was told it was a browser issue, not anything to do with the Astaro/Sophos product.  Strange, making an exception to not scan anything from that site resulted in the pages loading as expected.


    So,  is there a way to prevent a PDF from any site from being scanned by the A/V?

    The short answer is no.  You can create an exception for AV scanning for sites / URLs that you wish to disable it for (I would only do this for trusted websites).  It's not a good idea to skip AV scanning for PDF files for the entire internet, as there are some malware variants that "hide out" in PDF files.
