Odd Web Proxy Behavior

All,

I noticed today some slowness with web surfing. Additionally I used several speed test sites and noticed a very high ping times. There have been no changes to the ASG. However uing the comcast & speedtest.net test sites ping times reflected on the site are above 200ms and climbing. Normally they range between 40 and 60ms. I am using Sophos UTM9.004.33 running on a lenovo core 2 duo with 8 gig of ram. Turning off catagories, and other components of the proxy did not correct the issue. I am not using antivirus functions. Once the proxy was turned off ping times noted on the site went down to less than 30ms. The local content filter database is in use on my ASG. A restart of the ASG didn't help.... Your thoughts?

    Jim, I think the way the tests work is the problem.  They're single-threaded, so they do one thing at a time.  I just ran the Speedtest.net with 8.308.  Through the Proxy, I got 230ms and 1.38Mbps/0.38Mbps.  Using another SSID that doesn't go through the Proxy, I got 29ms and 1.54/0.40.

    There is an issue with the HTTP proxy messing with pings and overall throughput.  If I run my v8 VM pings and VoIP measurements all work great...with v9 ping and jitter and overall throughput craters..I have to increase CPU MHz allocation to v9 to fix the throughput but pings and jitter are still atrocious.  Hopefully the upcoming middle ware fix which directly interacts with HTTP proxy will alleviate this issue.

    Thanks! As it turns out the cause has been discovered and corrected. "Face in plam moment" Firefox 17 was creating the issue. Removed, and reinstalled, all fixed. Pings as reflected from the speed test sites are running between 20 and 45ms. Which is normal for my ASG. Now if we can get the IPS memory leak fixed.......
