Youtube for Schools

I figured it out.  Sorta.

This thing is a total letdown after using the VUSafe option included with the M86 Security solution.  From reading the forums they send you to for help, no one from Google knows how to work the thing either, when they reply at all to any of the requests for help.

It was an exercise in frustration getting the thing to work.  After creating 3 different accounts on Google/Youtube (none of which can be changed and once deleted can never be used again) I finally think I have it working.  

When your user goes to youtube dot com, they are redirected to youtube / education.   But none of your stuff is there and I got frustrated trying to get to it.  And I knew the name of it!  No way my teachers were going to be able to find the playlist/subscriptions I created.

They have to go to www youtube dot com / accountname to see the freaking page you created.  From what I read, I was expecting it to send them to the page assoiated with that long code you have to put into the proxy.  Not!

Sigh.  After figuring this out I am left wondering if it is even worth the effort.  Youtube / edu has almost none of the videos my teachers want to watch so I will now probably spend half my time just creating playlist and adding their videos to it.  

Odds are I am just going to turn the thing off and let them do whatever the heck they want.  That or just block youtube totally and let them scream.

After the ease of use of VUSafe, Youtube for Schools is a total letdown.  Youtube added the option to add a user to the site who would be able to have full Youtube access but they didn't add a way to add a user who could add / maintain their own playlists.  

I realize that Sophos did not design the system at Google/Youtube, but there has to be a better way.

I am dealing with this now, although we've thrown out the Astaro web content filter in favor of the Sophos web content appliance (since they're the same company now, I'd recommend you look at the Sophos stuff, honestly, not nearly as confusing as Astaro's stuff). 

The Sophos web content filter is supposed to simply integrate with Youtube for EDU/Schools, but, yeah, you're right in that there isn't much there, is there. It's like Google/Youtube abandoned the place. 

The unfortunate part of this is that it puts us in a place of opening up youtube altogether,  which also means teachers (in one particular district) letting students create video music playlists and listen to them in labs, which sucks bandwidth. 

So... what are you going to do? At some point, we'll be crushing their bandwidth because we have no choice.

For now, I am trying to learn to live with it. I make the teachers send me any link they want and I create the playlists.  It puts a load on me, but there is no way that I am going to just open youtube up for the teachers.  

VUSafe was a very easy site for our teachers to "self-maintain" a list of videos for their classes.  Most were very good about it.  One music teacher had 15 pages of nothing but CMT music videos that she used to "teach" with.  Sure.  When she asked if I were going to make her an admin so she could watch her videos, I told her, after I stopped laughing, to get the Wondershare utility and download her videos at home and come play them through her computer at work.  So far, I am still employed.

This whole Youtube / Google / Youtube for Schools is a hassle.  With no support from the Google/Youtube side.  The questions that are on their forum are months old with no responses from G/UT.

As to the Astaro Web content, well, I am used to it now.  The whole " if it won't work with the HTTP filter then exempt it" seems like a copout, but what can you do?

Were the Astaro/Sophos solution not $28k less expensive I would still be using the M86 solution. And if a frog had wings.....   

This Sophos appliance....  how is the interface different from the  UTM interface?  Does it operate in "pass-through" mode or does it work by monitring a port off our switch, like the M86 appliance does?  $$$  Are the logs kept on the one device or is it a set of multiple devices?

Any real benefit besides the UI?

It's like anything else really.  Each has it's own advantages and disadvantages compared with each other.

Over time, the Sophos UTM web security proxy and the Sophos Web Appliance will merge into one.

I'm not worried about them merging. I'd rather they made licensing interchangeable so the customer could choose one or the other without having to pay for both.

It's weird, actually.  In order for the library to purchase a video and keep it in the library for checkout, it has to meet certain "requirements".  Just what those requirements are is a mystery to me, but at least the principal has to approve them.

Our Asst-Super just made us open Youtube up for the teachers with no restrictions.  None.

We were trying to use the Youtube for Education to limit  the videos, but it does not work properly.  At least I cannot make it work and there is no help to be found in the YTFS forum on Youtube.

I went through the trouble or creating playlistsfor my schools, and adding the videos they requested, but once the screen is full of playlists the teachers are blocked from the "More Lists" button.  I just got tired of trying to get it to work with no help from anyone.

We have a 200M u/d connection and as of yet they have not managed to saturate the link.  I am sure they will give it their best shot though.

Apparently, todays's teachers put the kids in front of the TV (youtube) and let that teach them.

I would use application control and limit the bandwidth youtube is allowed to use to less than 50% of your wan link...[:)]
