Download progress with Sophos UTM 9

Hello together,

today I took the Sophos UTM 9 online. With installing a new virtual machine and restoring the settings from 8.305 everything is working fine. Some things are really better than on the older versions. The HTML5 VPN portal is a really great thing and is very easy to configure and use.

I only have one question at this moment: In the older releases of Astaro Security Gateway there was a progress page when downloading files. Since UTM 9 it looks like that there is no download progress page anymore, right? The downloads need some time until the save dialog window of the browser appears and it works fine but the progress page was much better because the user was seeing what's going on with his request.

Is there a possibility to activate the progress page? I didn't find the option.

    The progress page only shows up after the UTM determines that the delay would be too long between the "click" and the download due to size, etc... it will eventually pop up.  Also note that downloads that exede the scanning size limit set in Webadmin will behave "normally" as well.

    Hello together,

    OK, i tried some downloads and finally I got the progress page by downloading the MySQL Community Server.

    But my experience is that the download progress is very slow in comparison with the older versions (ASG 8.x). The download is even slower when the downloaded file is scanned and you press the save icon on the progress page.

    Is this your experience, too?

    I don't have exact numbers about the slower performance in comparison with ASG 8.305 but I have the feeling that there is a performance issue. It tooks more time for the download when I see the download progress page. Under 8.x I saw the page very often and it needs some time until the download could really be downloaded but with UTM 9 it seems to need more time. But it's only a feeling.

    I didn't change the security level by upgrading to UTM 9. I used the maximum security options for scanning the downloads and so UTM 9 uses these settings, too. Maybe, the Sophos scanner is a bit slower than ClamScan which was used under 8.x?

    Your hardware may be underpowered for V9; it does require significantly more resources than a machine that ran older version of V8 well in most cases.  A muli-core (dual core, etc.) processor is recommended, along with at least 2GB of RAM (more if you have more stuff enabled, or high bandwidth processing requirements).  In my testing here, performance is good, but only when you respect the need for more RAM, especially.

    ClamAV is still available in V9.  Since about V7.4, the other AV scanner has been Avira, and I've selected single-scan (Mail & Web) for any Astaro I've touched since then as Clam never gets a chance to catch anything!

    In V9, the singel-scan AV engine can be set to Avira or Sophos.  In the interest of having a different AV scanner on clients than at the perimeter, we've already decided to stay with Avira at the perimeter (in the UTM) so that we can deploy Sophos AV with Endpoint Protection.

    I haven't seen any reports here about the relative throughput of these two AV engines.  Hopefully, several people will try different tests and report here.

    ClamAV is still available in V9.  

    That's actually not true. Clam was replaced by the Sophos AV (you can check for yourself with `rpm -qa | grep clam`).
