Caching Web Proxy, can Astaro do this

Hi,

I am currently searching for a solution to revamp the entire external access in my organization.  So far after testing ASG v8 I have found that it is a very powerful product, and it meets our needs.  (in fact I am thinking of setting up the the "home" edition for my own private, though complicated setup at home).  One of our concerns though is being able to run a caching http proxy.

To be more specific management wants to be able to make sure that employees are not using the Internet excessively for personal use.  We would also like to reduce bandwidth usage by having the proxy served cached content from sites frequently accessed.  I want to know if ASG can do this natively or if I should seek to run a separate product alongside it (such as Squid Proxy).

    Hi, there is a caching option in Astaro's proxy.

    I'd suggest downloading a copy, and using the 30-day trial license, and also that you talk to a reseller for more guidance.

    The caching proxy however only caches small objects.  if your employees are downloading big things the savings might not be there.  Also keep in mind most sites are dynamically generated..so you may see little if any bandwidth savings no matter what caching proxy you use.

    The problem at his location though might be one of content streaming, which you can block just about anything and everything in Astaro.  Astaro is really good at catching the users who like to surf **** at the workplace as well, I've had to approach a couple of salesmen in the past about their excessive **** perusing.  [;)]  They couldn't figure out how they got caught, but it's really simple using Astaro and your company domain DHCP list.  [:D]  It can give you accurate usage on every IP address that touches the internet via the appliance.

    William is right about the caching proxy issue, you really aren't going to see much savings in terms of proxy cache, but you can see a tremendous amount of savings if you have a streaming problem, which is 90% of all bandwidth related issues that I've seen so far out there, along with torrent/limewire/file sharing people that do that in the workplace.  Astaro can block all of that nonsense as well.
