What the hell am I missing???

After getting hit with the same virus three times in a week I decided to re-enable the HTTP proxy on my ASG (7.501). I am now having flashbacks of why I disabled the HTTP proxy a year ago...

No matter what configurations I have tried, all HTTPS URLs time out. If I enable HTTPS scanning I can get some sites to connect, sometimes. The problem is I continually get "untrusted site" warnings in Firefox. When I accept the "risk" the page loads but it is in plain text; there are no graphics. If I disable HTTPS scanning the site simply times out.
I have tried the anonymous proxy and have also used normal, setting the proxy address in the browser. Nothing works!!!!

If I revert to having a rule in the packet filter that allows internet access for my laptop, and disable the HTTP proxy, everything works just fine.

Surely I am missing something here.
How the hell do I configure the HTTP proxy to allow me to connect to my bank?

    Don't ask me how, but without any HTTP/HTTPS rules in the packet filter I was able to connect to the internet by simply enabling the transparent proxy, and nothing else. This gave me the problems listed above, but it should not have worked at all.

    After creating a new packet filter rule of "internal network>web surfing>any" the transparent HTTP proxy works as it should.

    The really weird thing is that now if I disable that new rule and enable the HTTP proxy it has no effect, and I do not get access to the internet.
    I am guessing that this is how it should have worked initially, but that's not how it was.

    Anyway, life, the universe and all the dogs on the planet are now in harmony once again (and I can do my internet banking too); but my brain hurts now....
