I am new to Astaro’s ASG as well as to the forum. I have installed Astaro Security Gateway (free home edition) successfully on a core2 duo machine with 2 gig ram. I have successfully connected it as the gateway for my home network (replacing my linksys router) and everything is working smoothly. All of my host machines can get out to the internet and I am able to modify proxy settings in ‘transparent’ mode and have the ASG affect network traffic appropriately. I am, however, trying to get my head around the proper way to setup the proxy server (in any mode besides transparent) on my network so that all host computers on the network MUST go through the proxy to get to the internet. I would like to set the proxy up in standard mode because I keep reading that, while transparent mode is easier to set up and deal with, some services (i.e. HTTPS) might not fully work in this mode.
I cannot figure out how to successfully set up proxy standard mode so that my network is forced through the proxy. If I set up the proxy in standard mode and set a packet filter rule to enable traffic from the internal network to "any" external network, this seems to bypass the proxy altogether (i.e. I can still get to web pages from a host computer without setting up the browser's proxy settings) which defeats the purpose of having a proxy/filter/Antivirus. If I disable the rule that allows traffic from the internal network to the external network (my thinking was that disabling this rule would 'force' traffic through the proxy) then all traffic is blocked no matter if the host's proxy settings are configured or not.
I have read through the ASG 8.002 user manual, and while it thoroughly explains all of the ASG features and how to change the settings, it does not give any info on how to properly configure the gateway (i.e. do I have to set up certain packet filters before I set up the proxy?). I would appreciate any "elementary" style step-by-step setup guide that anyone can point me to on how to set up the ASG in some of the most common configurations.
