Hi

- Yes my CPU supports 64-bit and I did select 64-bit during installation.
- But this machine is more than 5 years old and I think only since version 8 have 64-bit.
- Thus during the older versions (5 years ago), no reason to go for 04 x 1GB.
- Furthermore going for 04 x 1GB would mean I need to waste the current 02 x 512MB.

Anyway 3GB and it is using 57% at most, wah more RAM than the highest appliance.

If only the Fit2PC has 64-bit that would be cool.

I stick to my HP Server due to I plan to deploy this command center sometime soon and put it on the DMZ.

- Time to set my HTTP Prox to None.
- Restart
- Set to Mem and see how long it takes to work as previous attempts took such a long time and several attempts, dont feel good about that.

if this is your home box another option is to reinstall using 8.103 and wait for 8.*** to get "finished"..

- The Ram dropped from 50% - 38%.
- Restarted Machine completely at about 40%
- Set it to Mem.
- Restart proxy.
- The RAM increased immediately to 55%
- Do not see any downloading activity, so I guess it loaded what ever is on the hardisk.
- Well guess I would use this for the time being.

William - I am fine with 8.201 (Not as good, does have significant bugs in HTTP but still usable for me, good to explore and learn the new features.)

Now I just need to figure out how come I dont feel as fast as it should be now that it is downloaded and in Ram.

it doesn't feel as fast due to the fact that 8.2xx has significant issues with the http proxy.  You may be lucky enough to be "right next" to a cff server that isn't overloaded..in that case things won't "feel" any different.  I'm banking on 8.103 http proxy not being hosed up like 8.2xx is.

I am in Singapore, how can I see which CFF Server I am talking to and do you all know if there is a Local Singapore in Singapore?

By the way, I plan to Reinstall 8.201 ISO as I dont feel confident with the Up2Date

how can I see which CFF Server I am talking to

Search the web filtering log for "cff" (without quotes).  Then do an nslookup on the URL to get an IP Address.  Then you can plug that  IP address into any web based Geo location IP lookup site.

To be honest it isn't really that important to know, since you can't specify the server that's used and your Astaro will try several different ones at any given time.

Just to muddy the waters a little more, I recently reinstalled 8.201 with 64bit kernel. I only allocate 2.5GB to astaro so I didn't need the 64 bit kernel but thought I would try it out. My observations:

1. There is no difference in overall memory usage between different kernels, so the choice is yours which kernel you want to run.
2. There is no obvious performance boost in the 64bit kernel vs 32bit kernel.
3. With v8.201 while using 64 bit kernel, I noticed a definite decrease in http proxy performance.

This might just be a coincidence but my 32 bit astaro was chugging along fine with 8.201 fresh install and local content database made it almost as good as 8.1x. However once I updated to 64bit, there is definitely a huge performance hit for some reason. Even running local content database is not as quick and efficient. I will probably revert back to 32bit once 8.202 is released[;)]

This is just plain wrong.

The 32Bit kernel makes use of PAE, which offers 52Bits to address memory which is a lot more than just 3GB [:D]

But *single processes* can only make use of max. 2GB per process. Since there are a lot of these on an ASG, IMHO there is no need to worry ATM if you're still using the 32Bit Kernel.

Cool New Observation that 32-Bit may be functioning Better than 64-Bit.

All Along I just take it that 64-Bit Definitely perform Better than 32-Bit and go with it since it was available.

Maybe during this reinstallation, I should give this 32-Bit a try again and if I can feel the difference then maybe it is true?

One thing to note, when I reinstall, I would restore my current backup and that means this MEM setting is there, it would start it's massive database download overnight.
