Additional URLs/sites to block

Thanks, Arun, for posting this.  I don't know the command line trick you're looking for, but this just reminds me of the reason that I was opposed to allowing bulk imports...

They usually respond in less than a few hours, and sometimes within the hour.

In most sites we work with, there are no entries at all in 'Additional URLs/sites to block'.  The categories work much better than any list any of us could define.  I also suggest blocking "Uncategorized" and have supplied all of our clients with the following to add to the standard 'Content Blocked by Surf Protection' message:

The URL you have requested is blocked by Surf Protection. If you think this is wrong, please contact your administrator. 


If the reason given was "Uncategorized not allowed" or the URL was incorrectly categorized, you may submit the site or URL with a suggested category at Trusted Source.  Please select "McAfee SmartFilter XL."

Further, I was able to customize the cache administrator with a click-to-email-name instead of just an email address:

Thanks for the reply.  I just wish there was a way to better manage the 'Additional URLs/sites to block' list. Thinking out loud, is it possible to backup ASG configuration to, say an xml file, removing the 'Additional URLs/sites to block' section and then restoring the backup?

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do.  I figure you can spend 10 minutes twice a day and be finished deleting them all by the end of the month - just don't forget to hit Apply! [;)]

The French have a great expression for such things: un piège à con is, literally, "an idiot trap" because one feels stupid to have been caught in it.  I think the user's manual and the help should give some guidance about trying categorization before importing large blacklists from older, less-capable tools.

I supported adding the bulk-import feature for marketing reasons, but have said consistently that it should not be used.  With a free user's acount at TrustedSource, one can check up to 100 URLs at a time to see what categories to block.

Depending how long it's been since your last backup, it might be less painful to restore from it and re-apply any changes you've made since.  (With the benefit of hindsight, I expect you'll take a fresh backup before making any changes in the future. [:)] )

Actually I used the hosts file from mvps.org. It is the best thing I have seen, much better than anything that ASG has. It saves me the trouble of deploying the file to every PC and does a very nice job of blocking of advertisements and virus infected web sites.

I hope ASG provides a better interface for managing the uploaded list.
