WU fails on transparent proxy

i have a proxy profile assigned for a "work" network using transparent proxy with content filter and a default fallback.

With this setup i'm encountering problems with windows update on XP, it gives a 0xsomething error(i don't have it at hand) that links to some articles saying it's a proxy problem.
The profile has microsoft.com and windowsupdate.com as "always allow"
Then i go and configure the proxy explicitly in IE and WU works flawlessly.

Now this raises some questions
1) why wu fails on transparent proxy?
2) Do the global exceptions apply to profiles?(i don't want any content scanning/AV/URL filter or anything for WU but i don't seem to find a comprehensive exception list like the global one for each profile), better yet, HOW to apply the exceptions tab to profiles granularly, because the "always allow" in the filter profile only covers URL filtering AFAIK

    msi  is blocked, exe not.
    The global exceptions should be taking precedence here as there's no way to configure exceptions for filter profiles for content filtering...

    and configuring the proxy(to a different network, check my other thread) is bypassing all the security i set for the transparent proxy
