Astaro blocks Python script to create Twitter posts

I have a python script that tries to posts to twitter, but it can't connect to twitter unless I create a packet filter rule that let's let's all traffic through.  I went onto the forums for the script and someone suggested I try telnet Twitter 80.  This didn't work unless I had the packet filter rule that let everything through.  I'm kind of surprised I even need a rule for port 80, maybe it's the proxy that's the problem.  I have Basic User Authentication.  I tried transparent mode and I even disabled proxy in Astaro, but that didn't help, not sure why.  I tried adding an exception in the web security > HTTP section, but that didn't work either.  I need help in creating a packet filter rule that let's me post to twitter.com.

    Hi, did you check the proxy logs? or the IPS logs?

    A packet filter rule:
    source: your script server/pc
    dest: ANY or Twitter's IP(s)
    service: http

    You'll also need Masquerading setup if you don't have it already.

    I looked at the Packet filter log and didn't see it blocking this.  This seems strange to me because adding the Any > Any packet filter rule made it work. 
    I don't know which proxy logs to check, there are several.  What is IPS? Is this this Intrusion Prevention System?  

    Before I go setup the packet filter rule Masquerading I'd like to understand something.  I have two computers, one running Windows 7 and a Mac on OSX.  In Astaro I have Basic User Authentication turned on.  But I have my Mac in the Transparent mode skiplist.  So on my Mac I don't have any proxy info setup and I'm not asked by astaro to login.  In my windows 7 I have proxy setup in the browsers and astaro asks me to log in.  On the Mac, telnet to twitter.com works, but on the PC it doesn't.  It seems to me Astaro is letting the mac telnet, but not my Windows 7 computer.  Does this make sense?

    What has me baffled is I added my Windows PC to the transparent mode skiplist, and thought telnet would start working just like it does on my mac.  but it didn't.  I even unchecked the proxy in IE (v8) tools.   If I open IE, I still get the astaro login popup, even though I unchecked proxy in IE.  IE is behaving as if I the browser is still using the proxy.  I even closed and re-opened IE.  I did not reboot the PC.

    In astaro I also changed HTTP operation mode from Basic User Authentication to Transparent.  That didn't help telnet either.  Next I tried to disable the proxy in Astaro all together, telnet still didn't work.  I admit that I only have a basic understanding of how proxy works.  I do get confused between the different modes.

    Regarding the packet filter rule, I don't know the Twitter IPs. Do I just to a whois lookup for this?  What does the Masquerading setup do?
