New Windows Live Mail feature - Web Messenger!

Hi Fellas:

Has anyone noticed that they have web messenger built into the html Live Mail/Hotmail site now?

Great feature for users, not so great for us... [:@]

Anyway, is there a way to block web messenger without necessarily blocking the Live Messenger rich client?

I know you can block it all using the IM/P2P rules but how would I go about just blocking web messenger?

    If you use http proxy, you can just add webmessenger.msn.com to blocked and walla problem solved. [;)]

    Did you go through Content Categories? Individual category can be blocked. For msn web messenger Astaro Security Gateway V7:
    The URL 'webmessenger.msn.com/' is classified under the following categories: Instant

    So would that be content filter categories, information & communication?

    All I see there is "instant messaging" and it is un-ticked.

    nope, that didn't do it for me...

    If you weren't using http proxy, it wouldn't do it for you[H]

    Creat a new network definition dns host webmessenger.msn.com and create a packet filter rule above all your access rules to reject any any webmessenger.msn.com. Between the above 2 suggestions, if the messenger is indeed coming from webmessenger.msn.com it will be blocked. If that doesn't work, create a rule for the site that you are using to access messenger and block it. Pretty trivial.

    I am using http proxy - that is pretty much the only thing I'm using the ASG for...

    I also tried the packet filter with no success...

    Maybe I'm doing something else wrong, or the IM/P2P default rule is overriding it or maybe it is the incorrect dns host?

    King, Why not enable IM Control and just block MSN Messenger?

    Or are you saying that the Hotmail interface is acting as a proxy for Messenger and that no IM traffic goes trhrough the Astaro?

    I'm not sure if it is capable of that - it might be, I haven't tested it...

    Yes, I want to control Messenger via s/w policies but completely block Web Messenger somehow if possible.

    I see that now, Billybob.  Still, it would be helpful to know if that works to block the web messenger.  If it doesn't, then we'd need to see the relevant lines of the Content Filter (HTTP) Live log during use of the web messenger.
