So would that be content filter categories, information & communication?

All I see there is "instant messaging" and it is un-ticked.

If you weren't using http proxy, it wouldn't do it for you[H]

Creat a new network definition dns host webmessenger.msn.com and create a packet filter rule above all your access rules to reject any any webmessenger.msn.com. Between the above 2 suggestions, if the messenger is indeed coming from webmessenger.msn.com it will be blocked. If that doesn't work, create a rule for the site that you are using to access messenger and block it. Pretty trivial.

I am using http proxy - that is pretty much the only thing I'm using the ASG for...

I also tried the packet filter with no success...

Maybe I'm doing something else wrong, or the IM/P2P default rule is overriding it or maybe it is the incorrect dns host?

King, Why not enable IM Control and just block MSN Messenger?

Or are you saying that the Hotmail interface is acting as a proxy for Messenger and that no IM traffic goes trhrough the Astaro?

I see that now, Billybob.  Still, it would be helpful to know if that works to block the web messenger.  If it doesn't, then we'd need to see the relevant lines of the Content Filter (HTTP) Live log during use of the web messenger.

Firstly, if you allow windows live client, why block the webclient. Lets say you have a special need, there are always a number of websites that let you sign in to a number of services. Using content filtering and blocking IM categories would be the easiest way to block everything. In astaro, if you check information and communication /subcategory Instant messaging, it will block all kinds of instant messaging including your windows client. Then you will have to manually create ports for the windows client to connect.

Here is the thing though, if you use http proxy and still have a packet filter rule allow http any, your browser is about the only thing using the proxy and unless you have a packet filter rule to go with it, its pointless.
